Big Stone Lake area kids can get in on some great Big Stone Lake on-the-water fishing trips at no charge this summer by joining the “Kid’s Night” outings presented by the Ortonville Let’s Go Fishing chapter.  Kids can pre-register for these Thursday evening outings (6:30-8:00 pm) by stopping by Bud’s Bait in Ortonville.  K-3rd grade youth can fish by bringing an adult along on the trip.  4th-9th graders do not have to have an adult along.  Availability will be on a first come first serve basis.  Each Thursday will host different age groups.  All trips will be captained by trained Let’s Go Fishing volunteers.  These trips will be lots of fun!  All you need to do to sign up is stop by Bud’s Bait.

The Big Stone Walleye Club and Let’s Go Fishing recently partnered to teach students in grades 4-6 the basics of fishing led by professional angler and LGF youth coordinator Mike Frisch!  All participants went through a classroom session for 3 hours where they learned about fish identification, fish habitat, feeding habits, and knot tying.  Every student received a fishing pole that they each tied up themselves to use on their fishing outing.  On Thursday May 19, 12 adults and 5 pontoons escorted all the students out on a fishing excursion on Big Stone Lake.  The night started with a picnic and ended with awards.  Bethany Danielson was the lucky winner of the drawing for a lifetime fishing license sponsored by the Border Walleye Challenge and the Big Stone Walleye Club.  Bethany will never have to pay for a fishing license her entire life to fish in Minnesota, a $300 value.  The Big Stone Walleye Club would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers and parents that helped make this possible!

Welcome to the Big Stone Walleye Club website!  Whether you are looking to sign up for the BWC or fish league or just find out more about the club, we would like to invite you to navigate our site!  The Big Stone Walleye Club was founded in 1999 by a group of local fisherman that wanted to come together to “promote the sport of fishing and conserve our natural resources.”  The club currently has over 300 members.  We strive to make a difference in the community by promoting tourism and helping with several local charities and organizations.  We also have taken an active role in the local “Let’s go Fishing” progam.  We would like to invite you to join our organization!

Fishing on Big Stone Lake

Big Stone Lake is a great fishery that offers anglers over 12,000 acres of fishing opportunities. Unlike many other lakes, Big Stone Lake has several public shore fishing areas up and down both sides of the lake. The shore fishing has proven to be as successful or even better than fishing from a boat in the spring and fall. Big Stone Lake is known primarily for its great walleye and perch fishing. It also has largemouth bass, silver bass, freshwater drum, catfish, bullhead, sunfish, crappie and carp. The season fishing opener is always three weeks prior to the Minnesota opener. Traditionally, from fishing opener until mid-may anglers will focus their efforts in 3 feet of water or less and primarily on the north half of the lake. Fishing with a jig and minnow or casting along the rocky shorelines remains the favorite technique for many. From mid-may through the summer months the south end of Big Stone Lake will produce good numbers of walleyes as the fish migrate back down to the south end of the lake. Most fishermen will then concentrate on fishing the weeded areas around the islands and troll spinners or crankbaits along the weed edges or even troll right down the center of the lake. As the water temps move into the upper 70′s, several other species like the bass and perch will begin to feed. Big Stone Lake also offers great fall fishing. Several people vacation the Big Stone Lake area from Labor Day until freeze up to get in on the great perch fishing. Big Stone lake is known for its large perch up to 13 inches long. The walleye action also regains its momentum as the water cools down in the fall.
